I liked Tamasha. And then... I did not quiet like Tamasha and then may be... I loved it!! Now "that", i feel is the problem with the film. It is a film as simple as it is complex!!
On the face of it, it is the story of a boy who lives a suppressed life. He then meets a girl who propels him to break free and realise his true potential. However, thats not how simply it plays out.
Now whether you relish the complexity of its narrative or feel distracted by it will decide how Tamasha feels to you! Either you will enjoy the nuances and end up carrying them with you out of the theatre, you will discuss and ponder over them or you will simply dismiss them.
I have always liked what Imtiaz Ali does with his screenplay. It is almost like he lays the whole screenplay in a series of Index cards and then juggles it up to see what can be achieved differently!!
So while i did enjoy the film in bits and pieces, there were some glaring loop holes that i could not ignore. Like the film really picks up almost 40 minutes after its start and while Corsica is beautiful, the scenes lacked the spunk which was there in "Rockstar" when Ranbir and Nargis went around Delhi- hoping C grade theatres, Drinking Old Monk, teasing men peeing on walls, etc. However, the most bothersome issue i had with the film was the cardboard nature of Deepika's character in the film. She is a simply and only a crutch to carry Ranbir's story forward- no more, no less.
Having said that, please note that it is a very sincere film. There is an earnest attempt to tell a certain story differently and that could be its undoing. The performances are enchanting. Every single actor is brilliant. The music gives it a perfect flavour and ambience.... Just don't go in expecting a simple film. It is NOT.
